PREMIERE: June Jones – Here, Something

PREMIERE: June Jones – Here, Something

There are a handful of voices in Australian music that resonate instantly as being something truly special. Standing on The Gasometer’s balcony at Two Steps On the Water’s last show, being punched in the chest with a wealth of emotion, it hit me that I didn’t know when I’d hear June Jones sing again. As the crowd erupted into a beautiful celebration of farewell and thankyou the lingering feeling that it may be some time before the poignant, room filling warble of Jones rung out on stage again filled me. Thankfully that wait was one of brevity as today June Jones’ returns with her debut solo single “Here, Something”.

Here, Something is spacious, minimal and glowing with a genuine warmth. Built on bass guitar, drum machines and synths, musically Here, Something takes the fundamentals of 80s music, slows them down and rinses them through a sadgaze sieve. Effectively creating a sparkly yet at times daunting soundscape off which Jones’ crafts her deft songwriting. A beautiful love song for nature coexisting with a lament of a relationship with it, Here, Something, has a duality to it that spirals, builds, drops away and stays ever interesting.

Having spent the last 10 months in studio with friend and producer Geoffrey O’Connor, Here, Something, is the first taste of Jones’ debut full length album Diana, set for release in early 2019. Asked of what to expect from Diana, Jones’ states:

“Diana is a collection of 10 songs about relationships of all kinds, as well as mental health and illness. Stylistically, it's quite different to anything I've done before. There is no 6 string guitar on the album, and aside from vocals it's mostly bass, synth, piano, strings, and drum machines. This album is the longest I've ever worked on a single thing in my entire life, and I owe my eternal gratitude to my friend and producer, Geoffrey O'Connor, who has been incredibly patient, open-minded, and helpful with me along the way. I’m really proud of it and I can’t wait to share it with whoever wants to listen. June xx”
