PREMIERE: Mount Defiance – Hospital Gown
With two stunning EPs in their back pocket and a reputation for having one of the Melbourne’s best live shows, Mount Defiance, are back with their cracking new single Hospital Gown. Laundry Echo is stoked to today not only premiere Hospital Gown but also announce Mount Defiance as the latest signing to Whisk & Key Records.
At the end of 2017, sitting amongst my most played artists on Spotify (a list comprised of Gang of Youths, Camp Cope, Ceres and Slowly Slowly) sat Mount Defiance. A fact that in no-way surprised me. There’s an honesty in the delivery of Mount Defiance songs that pulls no punches. The occa drone of vocalist Ed Tripodi leaves emotionally heavy lyrics laid raw with a beauty you’d never want to polish. That lyrical beauty combined with their penchant brilliance for indie punk song structures that are impossible to get out of your head leads to the Melbourne quartet being a pretty special band.
With all that said, latest single Hospital Gown doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. Lashed full of jangly composition, four to the floor drums and runaway guitar licks, Hospital Gown, is immediately huge. Tripodi’s vocal soon kicks in, catching the track, calming it and injecting with a deft lyrical intelligence that elevates everything about the song. Moments of every day description are interlaced with poetic takes on everything from tattoos to hometown fist fights, in a way that keeps the song ever interesting; bringing you back again and again to pick it apart further.
A song of optimism and getting ahead of yourself, asked on the meaning of the track, the band state:
"the song is about getting optimistically carried away inside your own head. Hoping for the best and expecting the best to pay you back in turn. It's also about being worried that your oblivious optimism somehow hospitalised someone you care about."
Officially out on all good music retailers June 11th, get ready to ad Hospital Gown to all your playlists. Until then, stream the single exclusively on Laundry Echo.
