PREMIERE: As A Rival – What We Got

PREMIERE: As A Rival – What We Got

Having spent 2 months in the recording studio, tracking no less than 50 demos, Melbourne tech-punk heroes As A Rival return with their brand-new single What We Got. Premiering today on Laundry Echo ahead of the release of the band’s second full length album Griefers.

A lesson in restraint and release, What We Got, switches from slow driving marcher to plateau leaper in a click between verse and chorus. A moment of musicality that grabs you and drags you into the song before lifting you up and carrying you through the remainder of the all-encompassing epic. This is a true fist in the air inducing, fifth gear finding and ball breakingly big anthem that is about to get thoroughly stuck in your head.

Written of the internal struggle of desperately trying to hold onto someone experiencing dark times. The conflict that comes when trying to find the good in a terrible situation and help a loved one through, despite a world seemingly crashing around them. Asked of the song, Pete Cerni, vocalist for the band states:

"There are times when we are tested - things that we love, that we live for are put to the sword and we’re left to question ‘is it all worth it’? It’s hard not to focus on the negative. It’s hard enough when it’s your own fight, but watching it happen to someone close to you can be debilitating and make you feel helpless. What We Got addresses the internal struggle that comes with failed attempts to try and comfort those in need."

A truly huge song in every sense from its musical execution through to theme, What We Got, has tasting notes of the 90/00s New Zealand punk/grunge scene greats The Feelers and Shihad. Making the placement of Shihad drummer Tom Larkin in the production credits feel truly perfect for As A Rival. A partnership that makes the impending drop of sophomore album Griefers all the more exciting.

Pre-Order As A Rival's new album Griefers from this Friday September 21, for release Friday November 2. For more information, go to https://www.asarival.com.
