Backyard Are Your New Favourite Band
Backyard are a four piece from Melbourne writing about the beauty of suburbia for a beautiful reason. They’re also your new favourite band.
Backyard write songs that seemingly sprawl forever, sprinkled with something intangibly lovely and polished with a subtle, unpretentious intelligence that places a hand on your heart and lets you breathe easy.
Backyard frontman Adnan Kadric fled Bosnia in the early 90s with his family for Western Melbourne. In doing so finding a beauty in refuge and the suburbs that has gone on to thematically inspire Backyard’s song writing. A beauty that seeps it’s way through every chord and makes everything about this band feel like home.
With three songs released to date, each with an enviable record for finding their way into “Best New Music” playlists and listicles, it’s safe to say Backyard are onto something special. Musically jangly and spacious with a penchant for a long ringing chord, Backyard sound as if Paul Kelly took the lead in Real Estate. Lush guitar lines interlaced with true troubadourism and a certain breed of occa only found in the suburbs.
Latest single Royal Park is a song of duality, location and connectivity playing off parallels between a new couple in a local motel and a person struggling to communicate in a foreign hospital all whilst remaining universally open and interpretable to the individual listener. It will have you reaching for the repeat button.
