The Powerful Helplessness of Doom with Obscura Hail

The Powerful Helplessness of Doom with Obscura Hail

What do we feel when the world is collapsing around us? Being born into the age of information and staying informed brings with it a weight that no generation before us has had to feel so universally. Doom is increasingly becoming dogma and bringing with it a unique emotional turmoil. A topic tackled beautifully on Doomer, the latest single from Obscura Hail.

I wake up to a 6am notification from ABC News every morning. It tells me what has broken in the last 24 hours and finishes on puppy news for consolation. I feel defeated by the day yet to begin, I feel guilty for how helpless I am to help and I feel the weight of my privilege for being able to exist safely a notification away from the terrors that cause my collective feeling of collapse.

It’s unhealthy. I know this.

Yet, what helps is knowing i’m not alone in the doom that the eternal news cycle brings on daily. Feeling a part of something is important. It doesn’t matter if the big picture is a puzzle that no-one knows how to solve, knowing I’m a puzzle piece rather than the person who needs to piece together the puzzle is comforting. Doomer is remarkably powerful in its ability to pull you in from the edge of your own internal doom, throw its arms around you and remind you we’re all in this together and working through it.

Don’t feel guilty, for just talking about how bad it is
And alone, what little difference you make
From now on tally, riot rally
To show we understand
That the world aint a ship to go down with

The chorus on Doomer, grabs you, holds you and asks you to move forward with it. Chin up marching against the inevitability of what is happening around us. The world aint a ship to go down with so don’t. Don’t give into the doom. Don’t give your whole to sinking down a rabbit hole of bad news. Do your part and know you are a part of something. It is fine if your part is a conversation with friends or footsteps in a climate rally.

Wrapped up in just under 4 minutes of bass fuzz, sparkling guitar riffs, harmonies and ever calming drums, Doomer is a feat of songwriting impossible to ignore. Truly, one of the best songs of the year to date and as taste of things to come from Obscura Hail’s upcoming EP Siren, an exciting tease of the September release.
